sort of yes and no. Soho's the past red light area. It still has brothels and strip joints however it's very very touristy and more of a place for broad nights out pubbing and clubbing and for LGBT folks to hang out. The problem is that there's superior sex shops outside of Soho, and better pubs and clubs for non-LGBT people to hang out (I'm not LGBT so I can't mention on whether or not they're better for LGBT people too).
It's not like say Amsterdam around the Kirk where everything's in one place. There's a number of decent sex shops all around London, but it's apt to be more expensive in soho.
There are better things to do in London than go sleazegrinding. There's tons of more amazing stuff to do.
Because light district usually means a spot to gather up prostitutes, not necessarily just some sex shops, which are much more convenient to find, and contrasting prostitutes they all have websites with a store locator on them which you might find useful.
By up they mean there are no longer (as many) prostitutes openly plying their trade on the street and not many drug deals going on in the alleyways. Anyone who used to go to Soho in the 80s will remember what it used to be like, it's now very tourist-friendly and safe. But as I said, there's a few sex shops still tucked away, generally around Brewer Street / Rupert Street but elsewhere too.
I'm sure there are abundance of haunts for prostitutes these days, although the only one I know for sure (because I commute through the area) is roughly speaking Shacklewell Lane in Hackney. But trust me, someone who's already standing looking for business at 8am so she's got enough cash to obtain a wrap of crack that morning is not somebody you want to put your dick anyplace near.
I also wondered if she ever looked across at me and felt sad for me that I had to sit down at a desk for 9 hours each day.

For a while, I was seeing them approximately every time I was out after 1am, but then there have been periods of 2 months or more where I haven't seen them at all.
A month following I moved here (that's just over a year ago) I saw a prostitute forcefully pursuing a guy, who wanted none of it. I thought I'd made a huge gaffe moving here. But then I've never seen something close to that happening since. The closest I've come is a girl asking if I want business while I'm trying to get my door key out, but they always have backed off straight away.
