I wouldn't really call the place a crime hotspot, it keeps serving till 4:30am at weekends so people just end up hammered there and leave coats and bags on chairs and forget them. Not sure how/why these "incidents" are reported to the police.
Most likely it's for insurance purposes. Most smaller insurances provided by banks and building society accounts for mobiles and gadgets all require a filed police report within 24 hours of the incident to be even looked at. It catches a lot of people out, this is even if you simply lose your phone. If it's as others are saying and this is the last port of call for many, then I would guess that some people are so pissed they could have lost there phone at any point within the last few hours of the night and falsely claim with the most 'solid story'. You have to fight tooth and nail when making claims on these insurances, might not be a claimants first time or has been burned before and know the deal. The system basically encourages people to report false incidents to the police. I'm obviously not saying this is the case for all incidents but possibly contributing to the spike in numbers.

Pissed arseholes making fraudulent insurance claims (therefore having to get a crime number from police) after dropping/losing/leaving their shit there. Pretty retarded really, especially given there's a (free) cloakroom you can put stuff in.

Pretty sad it's potentially threatening to close the venue - a Hackney institution.

I hope it doesn't go, Mare street won't be the same without the Valentine's Slag Tombola.
I have to ask, what is Valentine's Slag Tombol?
Turn up on valentines night, put your name in a tombola... Lets just say no one goes home alone. May not be suitable for those with a more... erm... 'linear' approach to their sexuality :/
I have no idea if this sounds like a fucking great night or the worst idea ever, hopefully they stay open so I can at least spectate
That would entirely depend on who you pick out of the hat.

I don't know this pub but I'll point out that when a place is closed due to crime, the police do give the owners warning that it's a hotspot. The owners of the Dolphin will have known this and done absolutely nothing about it if it has now ended up being closed down.
I don't know the place at all but 10 security guards (by their own admission) for a pub is quite telling by itself. I worked as a doorman on nightclubs with less guys than that.
It is sort of a club, though.
That makes more sense. I'm picturing it like the big O'Niels in Leytonstone now. Is that fair?
It's not that big, but it's open until 5am and has DJs at night.
