So I recently saw World's End (which I thought was hilarious). Without giving any of the storyline away, there's a humorous scene when the central character walks into the second pub of the pub-crawl and exclaims "now this is a pub!" (or something similar to that). However, it looks precisely like the first one (basically in the vein of a cookie-cutter Wetherspoons). What made it droll was that it was true to a great extent.

If you'll acknowledge this as the preface to my question, I'm going out with friends tonight and would like to stumble on a pub with character. Doesn't have to be the cheapest, oldest, etc., merely something that possibly makes it memorable and noticeable from other pubs, and if possible north of the river (best case scenario is a pub near the Jubilee or Metro line, but I'm up for everything really). So, some recommendations?

if you are in the city:
The Banker,Cousin Ln,City of London, London EC4R 3TE
- Has a number of nice seating OVER the Thames, (a little zone inside the juts out floating over the Thames, thus good views)
The Counting House, 50 Cornhill,London, Greater London EC3V 3PD
- One of my favourite city pubs for the architecture, used to be a counting house.

The Faultering Fullback. It's next to Finsbury Park. It's well recognized so the prices are above ordinary however it's not cookie cutter. If you're looking for spit and sawdust like I love then walk in to one of London's charming shitholes and order from a good old working men's club or something. Even the working men's clubs in central appear like Wetherspoons now. I've only been able to drink in Pubs for 3 years and even I've noticed this adjustment all over the UK. It's crap :(

They are too distinctive to say one is better than they other.
