Did you know that there are two kinds of work and holiday visas? Understanding their differences is important so you can make the best decision to suit your travel plans. A Work and Holiday Visa 462 allows you to work in Australia for up to one year, with the opportunity to renew your visa up to a maximum stay of three years total in Australia within those five years. On the other hand, if you're interested in working in Australia after travelling, then it might be worth applying for a Working Holiday Visa 417 instead.

What is Work and Holiday visa 462?

A Work and Holiday Visa 462 is issued by the Australian Government to citizens of countries who are 18-30 years old from a country that does not have reciprocal arrangements with Australia.

The 462 Visa allows a person to stay in Australia for up to 12 months, undertake employment in approved occupations, study or train in an approved course or institution for up to four months (which can be extended) and travel in or out of Australia any number of times during their stay.

Eligibility Criteria for Work and Holiday Visa 462 To be eligible for this visa, you must be: • Aged 18-30 years old, inclusive of your birth date at the time of application; • Living in Australia on a lawful temporary resident (subclass 408) or permanent resident (subclass 837) visa or as an Australian citizen; • In good health, with no medical conditions, which would pose either high costs to the Australian community or other significant health risks.

The following occupations are ineligible for this visa: any occupation designated as skilled by the Department of Home Affairs or any occupation involving child care worker, cook, cleaner, labourer, packer/packager/wrapper/handyman worker, refuse collector/garbage collector/rubbish truck driver.

The maximum duration of stay is 12 months from the date of first entry into Australia under this visa. Extensions are not available, so please ensure you can do everything you want within these 12 months before submitting your application.

What is Working Holiday Visa 417?

Working Holiday Visa 417 is typically granted for 12 months in Australia. However, the Working Holiday Visa 417 allows holders to stay in Australia for up to twelve months. Applications for the 417 visa can be made from 18 years of age. Applicants must have their own personal funds to support themselves while in Australia and medical and travel insurance coverage.

Applicants must also have sufficient English language skills before entering Australia or provide evidence that they will improve their English skills during their stay.

To be eligible for a Working Holiday Visa, applicants must: • Be citizens of certain countries • Aged 18-30 years old; • Have access to $4,000 in funds; and • Be able to meet the health/character requirements.

Applications are made through the Australian Government website by completing an online application form. The next stage is submitting a supporting document. After this, there will be an interview.

An invitation letter from your host organization or confirmation that they are willing to provide employment will also suffice. However, in some cases, additional documents may be required from employers or sponsors confirming the applicant for Working Holiday Visa 417 has been offered employment before their eligibility can be confirmed.
