Hi guys,

I need to go to the gym! I've been trying to locate places. Just wondering anywhere people go for an reasonably priced option or where the quality outweighed your budget. Preferably, central/south. Zone 1/2.

I'm a keen boxer with not enough money to join a boxing gym. Let's talk about 'boxfit'? I would also love me a swimming pool, however willing to accept this might not be an option beneath £80 a month.

I've been a part of LA Fitness (Holborn) for quite a while. They are inexpensive (~£35/month) and quite cheerful.

Pros:

  • Swimming pool, albeit not huge
  • Cheap(ish)

Cons:

  • Super hectic at peak times
  • They will also be a lot nicer to you to get you to sign up... and then once you're locked in to the contract they don't really give a f*ck re you
  • trendy classes book up within 2 hours, for instance, but they don't add any more.
  • SOOOOO hot. The air conditioning is a bit token

I've heard good things about Gymbox, but they are a great deal more expensive.

I'm a member of easygym (Oxford Street). They are low-cost (£19.99 /month with no contract) and all the apparatus is brand new as they only opened a few weeks ago.

Pros

  • Cheap, affordable, no contract
  • New equipment and heaps of machines

Cons

  • No swimming pool
  • style experience, they don't have a reception or front desk, you go in by entering a PIN code into a turnstile. The lockers don't have locks so you have to provide your own padlock, or buy one from their conveniently placed vending machines.
  • In the mens changing rooms there are only approximately 10 showers so at top periods you might have to wait...although I've not experienced that myself.
  • Can get hot at the machines next to the windows, stay away from those unless it's night time or cold outside

I'm not sure about classes as I'm not a classes guy, however there seemed to be quite a few scheduled, though I think you have to pay extra for them.

Not gonna lie - easygym looks better than LA Fitness! I had to sign up for 18 months to get £35/month, so no long term binder sounds good to me

take a crack at a bona fide gym: http://muscleworksgym.co.uk/ No frills, no pool, 45 quid a month, or PAYG for a fiver. Near Bethnal Green Station. You'll come out a healthier man on the other side. And I say man, because if you happen to be female, I'm sorry - but there are no changing rooms for you either.

Easygym on Oxford Street is fantastic value for money. They boast the best weights room I've experienced in London so far.

It is, sort of - if you select to train with becoming like them in mind I suppose. Other than that, it is also a no superfluities sports club with a budget price in a central location - which is what OP was looking for :)

I've been to Muscle Works a few times, it's good for the price.

As far as I recollect they have a lot of benches upstairs, a squat rack and power rack downstairs. They don't have a lot of space for bar work off the floor (deadlifts, cleans, snatches etc) but you can mostly squeeze in somewhere.

It also has a weighty punch bag.

Marshall Street Leisure Centre. Just off Carnaby street, never horrifically busy, I pay 42.50pm (I think). BEAUTIFUL, huge, sandstone edged pool.

They sort out tonnes of classes too but have o familiarity with those organised activties
