Daytime or Evenings? For daytimes -

The white swan on Upper St - go upstairs to the indoors balcony bit. Don't even think of going on Arsenal matchdays. Really.

Kings Head - Essex Road has a garden which is nice in Summer. (There is a King's head on Upper St essentially parrallel but I've never been in there).

The Compton Arms was recommended to me by an elder drinker but I never made it there.

Nononononono don't go close to the white swan. Ever. It's a wetherspoons. Compton arms is nice. The Albion is very nice - a little pricey but chic interior / comfortable armchairs / a fire when it's cold. 2 min walk from upper st. Not definite whereabouts you are in islington though.
Before you say that, can you give a cause why to steer clear of the Swan? Apart from the reality it's Wetherspoons (cheap drinks, chow and IIRC free wifi and during the daytime it's quiet; exactly what OP wants) Don't disregard I said the balcony. The guy needs a restrained place to get a little work done, and that place is (during the day).

Ignore the labels attached to brand names. Don't go along fashion, if he was asking for a then I in no way would have begun to think about mentioning it.

Boring drinks, shit atmosphere, bursting of incredibly strange people / alcoholics who are repeatedly loud / furious / perspiring (might impair concentration), boring, disgusting etc. Most wetherspoons aren't total shit-holes but the white swan is a little special. Never been on the balcony, maybe it's quiet. The main spot isn't that subdued in the day. There are so many better options within walking distance.
Boring drinks - all Wetherspoons present the same, OP isn't there to drink yet they have abundance of draughts, specials, the usuals + bottled selections and so on and that's your opionion

shit environment - OP isn't there to drink and that's your opionion

full of incredibly odd people - OP isn't there to mix and that's your opionion

alcoholics who are frequently loud / angry / sweaty - OP's going at daytime on the balcony not friday nite pre discotheque time and that's your opionion

If there are so many superior options i your opinion, then state your preference instead of downvoting.

I did. Recommended the Albion plus the Compton Arms. Infinitely better. Doesn't feel like the McDonalds of pubs.
I do appreciate where you're coming from but what OP is looking for isn't what every person wants in a pub, so I was merely throwing some suggestions out there. Sorry If I came across as an asshole. Don't get me wrong, I fully know what the swan entails, that's why I said day/night as it is literally two separate worlds.

I'm in the Barnsbury right now, by Liverpool Road, and it's completely acceptable (plus, Bath Ales). No wifi, though.

In reply to your question. not considering of peelin's comment, I'm gonna further suggest The White Swan, the inside balcony (not the entrance balcony, in the center of the pub theres a vast raised area, I've known people to come in and not even realise it's there) is almost always empty, free wi-fi,, draughts, ales, specials etc, and no music.

You could make out every single person in the pub at the time, but if your upstairs, you won't be bothered.

Also - I know this isn't what your looking for in a pub - just off-setting the recommended negatives mentioned in here - I promise you there are some fucking grand locals there, I won't deny there are some arseholes, (this is planet Earth we're chatting about here) but some of the most out of the ordinary people I have ever met, have been from this pub.

I've gotten a wifi password off the bartender at the Barnsbury before, however admittedly haven't been by in awhile. perhaps ask the next time you're there?

well they are all pretty dead. The Bull has free wifi and is quiet during the day.
