There's some nice bits in Hackney Wick - the counter has been mentioned, try looking on Roach Road for breakfasty things (often combined with art exhibits...), the old salmon factory does extremely nice food, and the Hackney pearl is always worth a look.

Depends what you're keen on - head over to Victoria park for very good pubs and food. The Brittania do a fantastic sunday lunch, and the royal and Lauriston on victoria park village are equally good. There's also some fantastic small shops there - I love the fishmongers, and also a new Mexican place which does a half-decent concoction too. Check it out if you have time.

Stratford is kinda shit now. Some nice new Olympic flats that are very unfortunately next to a loud road. Tube connections are awesome. Would maybe be hard to get home from a late night out. It's prime for gentrification. There is not much out here other then Westfield.I'm sure this will change. Value has no where to go but up.

Hampstead is way better.

If not for the racket and the fact it's going to look too modern I would have bought out there. I got a place in Chelsea instead.

Plan B: Stay in Hampstead get the flat in Stratford only if it is a new build. Rent it out and find someone else to pay the mortgage. Pad it a bit. Make the lease so you can a fiddle with the price. Move there once the area gets better and a good portion of the house is paid off.

It's in fact pretty effortless to get back to, the 25 and n8 are really practical routes.

If you are chatting about the bridge next to the Bow Flyover, then I live in that area. I've been here for nearly 3 years now, and can say that it's a good place to live. The traffic racket takes a bit of getting used to, although now I don't even take notice of it anymore. If walking or cycling, you ought to be a bit careful on the Bow Flyover roundabout. It's very busy, and people drive too fast around it. Two cyclists were killed on it within the space of a month. This was a couple of years ago though.

The Morgan Arms in Bow is a quite nice place. The food can be a bit hit and miss - occasionally it's great, othertimes not so. It does boast a good atmosphere though. You've also got the Westfield Stratford, which has a few good places to eat (plus shops, cinema & casino). For breakfast, we've only been to Gardiners (E3 4PH). It's a bit small (hard to get a seat), but the food is good. If you like asian food, then it's worth trying Zains, Kiismat Diner (try the lamb saag!) and Tayyabs.

The transport links are first-rate - good bus service, loads of tube stations close by, easy to get out of London if you have a car. You'll also be right next to National Cycle Route 1, which goes from Dover to the Shetland Islands. I used to use this route to commute to Essex, which was great (no cars), especially in the summer.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I think you'll like living in the area - I've got no regrets.

Hey thanks for the great reply! I'm in fact a bit closer to stratford here but the Morgan Arms looks really nice - I'll certainly give it a go!

Cheers for the restaurant reviews I'll test them out in particular the lamb sag!

I normally get the tube but I'd be game for giving cycling a go - but perhaps the Bow roundabout isn't best for a first try!

I think I know where you mean. If so, I've been watching that building go up for a while now - looks like it'll be really nice when it's finished. If you do fancy cycling, you can use the tow path to get close to the Thames. Then there is the barclays cycle superhighway. I use this to get into work. I can get to Tower Gateway before I meet a car.

The Pie Crust cafe on Stratford High Street does good, low-cost Thai food.

The King Edward pub is almost certainly the best in Stratford with more or less semi decent food, significant selection of beers and great seating. I have found its very painless to spend a Sunday afternoon in that pub. If your looking for something that opens a little later on the weekends Try the Cart and Horses. Iron maiden played there years ago and they frequently have pub bands and open to about 2am.

The food in Stratford is pretty bad, you have Westfield with the usual array of chain restaurants. Outside of Westfield there is a Sushi Place plus Turkish Kebap shop on the Grove that do moderately wholesome and appetizing food.

The takeaways are unfortunate apart from Good Friend.

I have always struggled to find a good breakfast in Stratford I normally end up jumping on the train at Maryland going to Liverpool Street and drinking at the Breakfast Club in Hoxton.

Checkout Stratford Picture house for a semi autonomous cinema and the theatre that are both quite cheap and fun. The pub near the theatre also has a comedy night each Monday which is free and occasionally surprisingly good.

The waterways are very good, you can rent boats in the summer and row up the regent's canal/river Lea, if you own a cycle a truly good day out is to cycle all the way up the river lea out into the country side, or if you don't want to go that far, just go up as far as Stoke Newington and call on some of the bars up that way before heading back.

True, those dirty net curtains aren't exactly welcoming! Looks like the place hasn't changed in at least 20 years. Once you're within the people are very nice, as you say.

If you find yourself wandering round the inshops, unearth the chinese takeaway and acquire yourself some curry chips. The best curry sauce.
