I work there, and would love to live there - even if my job was elsewhere. But the place really reflects my interests too. Such as deep music, art, streetwear, creative industries, etc. There's regularly a lot of great gigs events and exhibitions going on there too.
Take a wonder on the weekend, check out Boxpark, Brick Lane, the restaurants and coffee shops (like Present on Shoreditch High St). Oh I know hipsters get a lot of flack here on but I've found the neighborhood there really friendly and so many hipster girls are hot as fuck!

I live also love Shoreditch but a number of people \ places take themselves a bit too seriously. I'm not paying £4.70 a pint but there are lots of great places to eat, drink, play and pick up people.Brick Lane, Hoxton, etc are all good times waiting... If you're looking something more settled, I would suggest Stoke Newington or North of Dalston for the up and coming IMO. The city, starbucks, and pink shirts are moving nearer and closer into Shoreditch with each skyscraper.
My commute is verging on 2 hours at present, so in fact 30 minutes isn't too shabby.
I've acquaintances in old street and I went to college there for a while. I'd almost certainly move there if I had the chance! There's tons to do round the area and brick lane/spitalfields is also not too far of a walk.
when i moved to london i spent a few weeks living in old street, and while very young and studenty, it seemed pretty good, compared to the east side of london where i now live. It genuinely depends how much the commute matters to you.
