The Morgan Arms in Bow is a quite nice place. The food can be a bit hit and miss - occasionally it's great, othertimes not so. It does boast a good atmosphere though. You've also got the Westfield Stratford, which has a few good places to eat (plus shops, cinema & casino). For breakfast, we've only been to Gardiners (E3 4PH). It's a bit small (hard to get a seat), but the food is good. If you like asian food, then it's worth trying Zains, Kiismat Diner (try the lamb saag!) and Tayyabs.
The transport links are first-rate - good bus service, loads of tube stations close by, easy to get out of London if you have a car. You'll also be right next to National Cycle Route 1, which goes from Dover to the Shetland Islands. I used to use this route to commute to Essex, which was great (no cars), especially in the summer.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I think you'll like living in the area - I've got no regrets.
Cheers for the restaurant reviews I'll test them out in particular the lamb sag!
I normally get the tube but I'd be game for giving cycling a go - but perhaps the Bow roundabout isn't best for a first try!
If you're going to venture as far as mile end for breakfast/food, you ought to also try the fat cat, the crown, or any of the tons of cafes (lebanese, algerian, british) cafes down burdett road.
There's also a great restaurant near that area called ariana, which has totally amazing persian and afghan food
The king edward pub in stratford is by far the best place for pubgrub/roast etc, and is a decent pub too. There's also a wetherspoons nearby that stays open until 1am if you want a later drink, and a little adventure

The Red Lion in Leytonstone is a lovely little pub, something you'd not think to stumble on in the area. I know it's not stratford but its a 10min bus or 4 min tube ride away.
Hampstead is way better.
If not for the racket and the fact it's going to look too modern I would have bought out there. I got a place in Chelsea instead.
Plan B: Stay in Hampstead get the flat in Stratford only if it is a new build. Rent it out and find someone else to pay the mortgage. Pad it a bit. Make the lease so you can a fiddle with the price. Move there once the area gets better and a good portion of the house is paid off.
I hope Chelsea is working out for you, but I'm moving into a flat next to the river and backing onto what will be the largest park in London - I think it's a pretty great spot and whilst the area might not be the best now, it almost undoubtedly will be soon.

River in Stratford? Park? What?
Yes, like is said it's going to get better. perhaps you should look into docklands. The first flat I lived in when I moved back was there. I only moved out for the reason that I don't want to wait for the area to get better.

there are abundant bus stops and at least one train station that run services that leave stratford behind you
