The clue is in the name End It's called that for the reason that you run a mile before you meet your end, stabbed with a knife by a veiled youth.

comparable in France, right?
If you don't enjoy then I recommend you don't come to London.

However, if it's just crime you don't like, then you won't have a challenge if you have half a brain. But there are plenty of

What is the objective of this? You want to find the nastiest area in London?

No, it's OK. Mile End Park is nice. Tredegar Square is in Mile End: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=tredegar+square&source=lnms&tbm=isch

...as is The Greedy Cow: http://www.greedycow.com/

...and the Morgan Arms: http://www.morganarmsbow.com/

North of Mile End Road is by and large a little nicer than south of it.

Agreed on all points above. I lived on the QMUL campus for a year and spent a decent bit of time (day and night) wandering round Mile End. Never had a problem—it's just a case of your wits about you. canal's lovely, and Mile End Park and Leisure Centre is rather nice. The Greedy Cow is a fantastic restaurant. It's also a short walk or bus journey away from a Lidl and a big Sainsbury's, which makes food shopping especially convenient.
I'm actually asking 'cause I'm thinking of applying to QMUL. What's it like?

I just got back from a month at QMUL and found no troubles with the area. While I wouldn't walk outside unaccompanied at night, I wouldn't do that anywhere. I never felt unsafe. I am a adolescent female, if that makes a difference.
What's QMUL like?

Lovely. The campus (and the private student halls opposite) are great. Transport is very straightforward and cheap, and Hackney, Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf are in walking distance.

20 minute tube ride to central London is a little excessive, though, innit?

Go to uni for the reason that you like the uni, you can pretty much live anyplace north of the river and commute to Queen Mary easily. Mile End is fine, it's pretty trendy these days.

As with wherever in the inner city, don't go to stupid places at stupid times on your own, and you'll be fine.

Twenty minutes? Twenty minutes!? Twelve minutes to Bank is completely acceptable!

I was there with my school back home, so I didn't get the inclusive campus experience. I loved it though! The dorms are nice and the campus is beautiful. I didn't really eat at the cafeteria, however from what I did see, it was expensive. The canal is right next to it and Victoria Park is very close too.
