Am I missing something here? Since when has Mile End or anyplace in hipster Hackney been nice?

There's a number of very... unfortunate remarks in here.

Bits of Tower Hamlets are a bit rough, but in general more 'downbeat/could do with a lick of paint' than really violent or dangerous.

Mile End road itself isn't paerticularly attractive. It's a big strip of concrete lined by Chickn Shops. Mile End Park, Tredegar, Bow Quarter etc etc are all very nice. You're also in easy distance of the river, you have Mile End and Victoria parks (both awfully nice) nearby, there's plenty of good places to eat, you've got a five minute bus ride to the biggest mall in Western Europe, if you want to go shopping, a 15 minute ride to central (Remember, most commutes under an hour are seen as 'good' in London).

It's cheap, it's well connected, it's got some nice stuff, and it's straightforward to find interesting places to go at night and good places to eat. If you're especially timid, try looking for somewhere a quarter mile or so to the North.

TL;DR: it's fine, stop being daft son.

No, it's OK. Mile End Park is nice. Tredegar Square is in Mile End: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=tredegar+square&source=lnms&tbm=isch

...as is The Greedy Cow: http://www.greedycow.com/

...and the Morgan Arms: http://www.morganarmsbow.com/

North of Mile End Road is by and large a little nicer than south of it.

Agreed on all points above. I lived on the QMUL campus for a year and spent a decent bit of time (day and night) wandering round Mile End. Never had a problem—it's just a case of your wits about you. canal's lovely, and Mile End Park and Leisure Centre is rather nice. The Greedy Cow is a fantastic restaurant. It's also a short walk or bus journey away from a Lidl and a big Sainsbury's, which makes food shopping especially convenient.
I'm actually asking 'cause I'm thinking of applying to QMUL. What's it like?
Lovely. The campus (and the private student halls opposite) are great. Transport is very straightforward and cheap, and Hackney, Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf are in walking distance.
20 minute tube ride to central London is a little excessive, though, innit?
Twenty minutes? Twenty minutes!? Twelve minutes to Bank is completely acceptable!
Living and studying in zone 1 is much preferable, though?

And there isn't really much going on around Bank, is there? I was chatting more Oxford Circus etc.

Honestly, the eight minutes' variance or so by tube makes next to no difference in the end. Twenty minutes to Oxford Circus is just fine in reality.

(Plus, the number 25 bus runs extremely frequently, twenty-four hours a day, direct from the West End and the City to QMUL. So it's nice and painless to get back after a night out.)

GO TO GREEDY COW IT IS AMAZING
Really?? What did you like regarding it??

I've been there a number of times and have in no way enjoyed it..to the point that I've now vowed to never return..I've always found the food to be disappointing and overpriced for what you get, and the service token at best.

The morgan arms, zeera are far better..my favourite in the area is beyond doubt Ariana, a persian and afghan restaurant that serves utterly amazing food

I'm from Texas. Most of the food I had in London wasn't great. I liked the meat there more than at other places. Plus they had the best fries. I don't eat bread and their menu said a salad may possibly be subbed for the roll and I liked that too. And the whole lot was expensive, so prices didn't concern me.
