The first-rate Grape & Grain might suit your bill: a good beer selection, food, darts, pub games... the lot.

The Pelton Arms http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d3293879-Reviews-Pelton_Arms-London_England.html

Also a good pub, since its renovation is The Cutty Sark. But it needs to be avoided at top tourist times since it's a nightmare then... http://www.cuttysarkse10.co.uk/

Where in particular in SE/how far out are you equipped to go? I'm a admirer of:

The Victoria Inn in Peckham,

Stormbird in Camberwell (loads of beers),

Blythe Hill Tavern in Forest Hill (bit more of a pub),

The Hob in FH (comedy, pool),

Catford Bridge Tavern in Catford

Princess Of Wales in Blackheath (pretty good roast)

The Victoria Inn is fucking terrible, constantly full of screaming kids and very pricey beer for a chain pub. The Great Exhibition a tad away but a great deal nicer and their Sunday roasts are amazing - http://www.drinkinlondon.co.uk/great-exhibition

Some of those are relatively close to me so I might test them out. Thanks.

And might you make clear what you mean by 'proper' pub?

Agree regarding the Vic. These days it's a chain gastro pub full of kids. The Montpelier down the street is much superior and also does fantastic chow and has good events like film screenings in the back room.

I love the Pelton, but Cutty Sark is simply too expensive, and can get ridiculously busy. I do not go to the Pelton Arms enough.

Yay for Crystal Palace! We have some fantastic pubs!
