I use to live in Westbourne Park. in spite of living in ex-council flats and having a number of bus routes pass my flat, it was a moderately safe area with no major problems.
Close to Portobello Road for fresh fruit and vegetables, a hive of goings-on with tourists and the Carnival in August. Plenty of pubs, my favourite being The Metropolitan. Very close to central, I use to walk home on nice days which would take 1hr 30, train stations easily reachable via the tube for when travelling with business. Easy to get to/from Camden on the 28 bus which stopped right outside. East London was a different kettle of fish however.
Only downside to the area is me and my flatmates were a little out of the age category, being graduates we were young(ish) for the area.
It is never in actuality going to be trendy for the reason that it was never truly shit. Have you checked out The Southampton Arms next to Gospel Oak tube? One of the nicest pubs in London.
Stroud Green/Finsbury Park, I love the up and coming feeling the neighbourhood has now, tonnes of businesses and eateries are opening up in the area. Close to Dalston and Camden for night-life. Having grown up there it feel fantastic that the neighbourhood is civilizing itself, the 00s were not a good time for Finsbury Park, we were the home to Abu 'Hook Hands' Hamza and there were some sketchy church/cult shit going on as well as rampant street crime. The transport is some of the best in London, markedly when you reflect on rent/house prices.
I hate the butchers along Stroud Green road, they smell terrible, the butchers walk around covered in blood and bits of meat. We still need a quality pub but I am sure that will be solved soon. Also too many super markets, there are two Tescos and two Sainsburys within 10 mins walking.
Mark my words, in 10 years the hipster place to be will be Walworth/Old Kent Road

From my perspective only newcomers and hipsters call it Hackney. I'm pretty much on the boarder of London Fields and Dalston. The Hackney I identify is a shit hole, but it's my shit hole. I was a youth worker and worked in the majority areas of Hackney, with gangs, mostly in Dalston.
Yes I have a chip on my shoulder concerning the influx of middle class white people flooding the borough. They've made it more pricey for me to rent here. I don't go to popup whatevers. I don't go to the bars or pubs they've taken over. I don't go to the cafes or overpriced restaurants. All this improvement (gentrification) is not for locals. Yes Hackney is safer than in the 90's/early 00's but its still far from safe. They seem to wander about at all hours and assume it's safe. They've shattered the Hackney I know and love. They're the types to laugh at and despise 'chavs/rudeboys' while at the same time trying to buy into 'street culture'.
I'm going to finish ranting, it's plain what my stance is.
