From my perspective only newcomers and hipsters call it Hackney. I'm pretty much on the boarder of London Fields and Dalston. The Hackney I identify is a shit hole, but it's my shit hole. I was a youth worker and worked in the majority areas of Hackney, with gangs, mostly in Dalston.
Yes I have a chip on my shoulder concerning the influx of middle class white people flooding the borough. They've made it more pricey for me to rent here. I don't go to popup whatevers. I don't go to the bars or pubs they've taken over. I don't go to the cafes or overpriced restaurants. All this improvement (gentrification) is not for locals. Yes Hackney is safer than in the 90's/early 00's but its still far from safe. They seem to wander about at all hours and assume it's safe. They've shattered the Hackney I know and love. They're the types to laugh at and despise 'chavs/rudeboys' while at the same time trying to buy into 'street culture'.
I'm going to finish ranting, it's plain what my stance is.
Willesden. There are only 5 hours of the day you can't get a pint. I like it a lot.
I lived in harrow previous to this and it's a lot improved where I am now.
I just moved to Tufnell Park myself, loving it so far. Ever go to the Boston? It's um...interesting!
Shadwell - no one seems to have heard about it, it's between Whitechapel and Wapping, Tower Hill and Limehouse.
- 4 mins to Bank on DLR, 8 mins to Canary Wharf, 6 mins to Shoreditch High Street, 4 mins to Canada Water.
- local to nice pubs in Wapping and Limehouse
- cheaper rent/sale prices than surrounding areas
- some adjoining parkland: Wapping Woods and King Edward's
- no Pubs left in Shadwell itself
- nearby Tesco extra, Iceland (if it's close to payday), corner shops, chippy, etc.
- Wilton's Music Hall is cool
- Rosemary Lane is a lovely, albeit quiet, little restaurant.
- Watney market is a tad shit.
Overall - it isn't attractive but I'm comfortable here
Bermondsey, near The Blue.
Love the building, the flat is so current and big, but the area I'm not overly enthusiastic on. Nothing to do with it in terms of danger or anything, just that I find it has very little to do, no much cafes or bars to visit.
It does have the number 1 bus go directly through, so can be on The Strand in about 20mins, so relatively good for access into the centre of London, and takes me 30mins from door to door to get to work on Goswell Road.
Did stay in West Brompton before which I totally loved, so many little places to visit, was constantly finding something new and was 'about' 45mins to work.
Near Croydon
It's on fire quite a lot
Doesn't really count as London

How is it? As a North Londoner I find it's terrible if there are any traffic issues, as its almost always bus as the only option.
It has gotten a lot better with the overground replacing the old east London line mind. But I still imagine we should be doing more.
