Bermondsey, near The Blue.

Love the building, the flat is so current and big, but the area I'm not overly enthusiastic on. Nothing to do with it in terms of danger or anything, just that I find it has very little to do, no much cafes or bars to visit.

It does have the number 1 bus go directly through, so can be on The Strand in about 20mins, so relatively good for access into the centre of London, and takes me 30mins from door to door to get to work on Goswell Road.

Did stay in West Brompton before which I totally loved, so many little places to visit, was constantly finding something new and was 'about' 45mins to work.

Bermondsey has a number of great places. Joses, the hide. Nice pub on bermondsey st as well although the name escapes me.
True, it does, Joses is totally fantastic, but where I am, next to The Blue, there's very little to do.

I don't mind the walk, however compared to other places, there's awfully little the doorstep so to speak.

Homerton for the reason that it's in Hackney but it's in cycling distance of everywhere and it's not as cool as Shoreditch. It's on it's way though, extremely upsetting.

I live on the border linking Kennington/Vauxhall. The nightlife rages on, rollerdisco round the corner, 20 minute walk to southbank, respectable restaurants on Kennington Rd, right on the Victoria line.

I spend a lot of my time where I work in Camden and my god, did I wish I live there? yes. But I have economical as hell rent in a half decent area so I'm not complaining. I'm fairly comfortable and like how close to central it is.

I live right next to Tufnell Park. I went to Acland Burhgley. I suggest you try the Cardigan Cafe it's on the main street that leads down to the junction with the Sainsburys on it. It does very good Vietnamese food. I suggest the 'market rice' which garlic pork.

So..

  • Right next to the heath which is fantastic for riding my new bike (even though we're not allowed)

  • C2 goes straight to Regents Street and Soho which I like

  • Hampstead Heath Lido

  • Good tube link

  • Camden town is good for shopping and stuff.

  • Live close to Hampstead/Highgate neighborhood and the more grim areas like Archway and Holloway. Nice to have a mix.

Edit: Tufnell Park is gradually becoming trendy. With the addition of places like 'Ruby Violet' ice cream and some little art shops as well as the Cardigan Cafe it's not far off being the 'new spot'.

Teddington, London Borough of Richmond.

Nice and safe, a number of amazing restaurants and pubs, and a extremely village-y feel. Has something alien to me coming from living in the heart of cities all my life. It's called also extremely quiet, and quite often absolutely boring. But that's what I want right now.

It's also extremely expensive, but I lucked out and got into one of those arrangements where I look after their 2-bed apartment while the landlord is away for 90% of the year while I get low-priced rent. £600 a month including bills.

I'm glad to be in the suburbs, but getting to work can be a nightmare.

I personally live in the far-flung southern tip of Croydon

The Goods

  • Really good connections into London. Train from East Croydon to Victoria in 15-20 mins
  • plenty of young people, alas quite a few chavs though I'd have to say its in a decline (Thank god)
  • The southern tip Croydon is in fact quite nice, I mean, its usually more middle class than other parts of Croydon and has quite low crime rates. Im not worried specially about something happening here, still I would definitely be wary of central Croydon.
  • Bus services are also good, nearly all buses come every 15 mins or less on week days and you can pretty much get anyplace with them
  • It's getting better. I am in fact super excited for the future of Croydon, they're finally building, or at least very soon will be, on brown sites with modern buildings to at last start getting rid of that horrible 60/70's concrete hell that sadly Croydon thrived in. It may even be a well-liked retail spot once Westfield and Hammerson are finished with Whitgift/Centrale. It's an civilizing situation and I feel like the only way is up, markedly after the riots.

The Bads

  • On the other hand, Mayday/Croydon University hospital. Whatever you do. Don't. Ever. Go. There. It's really not a nice atmosphere to be in and the idea of having to go to go there brings on panic attacks for me.
  • The universal idea of is the worst place ever It's ultimately a self fulfilling prophecy in that people forever seem to say it, and therefore seem to treat it just as if it were precisely that. It really could be worse (even if West Croydon is ultimately a no go zone for anybody with good knowledge of the area), and moving somewhere else wouldn't make me any happier.
  • It's very hilly. I know that sounds like a weird bad point, but it can be very deadly if you're a cyclist as its generally up and down all the time, mostly in South Croydon. I would certainly cycle more if it was just a bit more flat!
  • We don't have any underground stations (like most of bloody South London). It would be nice to be able to even get around into neighbouring Sutton or Bromley using the system, the next thing we have to that at the moment is the Tram (which has its own ups and downs)

Lots of folks seem to judge Bermondsey Street as being in Bermondsey but in fact it's London Bridge, or at best it's on the border of Bermondsey.

For instance it's a 20 minute walk from Bermondsey tube station and maybe 10 from London Bridge.

JMH71 is right, there's not a huge choice of good places in Bermondsey itself, even though it's quite a big place in terms of area, but there are a few and I think it'll get better in the next few years as there's so much growth going on.

Cardigan Cafe is run by a buddy of a friend, I still haven't tried it yet but the menu looks great.

Harrow.

It's okay.

Shadwell - no one seems to have heard about it, it's between Whitechapel and Wapping, Tower Hill and Limehouse.

  • 4 mins to Bank on DLR, 8 mins to Canary Wharf, 6 mins to Shoreditch High Street, 4 mins to Canada Water.
  • local to nice pubs in Wapping and Limehouse
  • cheaper rent/sale prices than surrounding areas
  • some adjoining parkland: Wapping Woods and King Edward's
  • no Pubs left in Shadwell itself
  • nearby Tesco extra, Iceland (if it's close to payday), corner shops, chippy, etc.
  • Wilton's Music Hall is cool
  • Rosemary Lane is a lovely, albeit quiet, little restaurant.
  • Watney market is a tad shit.

Overall - it isn't attractive but I'm comfortable here

The George is good for a pint or two.

It is a exceptionally good pub, second favourite in the area after the Captain Kidd, although I would say it's (The George) more Whitechapel.

edit: clarification
